Stronger Together

A physician leadership program using rowing as a vehicle for team building

Problem

Coming out of the pandemic, we had burned out leaders with no local tools to reconnect them with the "why" behind their work or inspire their teams. Healthcare professionals were struggling with isolation, exhaustion, and loss of purpose in their calling.

Current State

The Darden School offered a leadership course using rowing, but it didn't focus on physicians or connect with the medical field's unique challenges. The course was also a week long, making it difficult for busy clinicians to attend.

Solution

We drew from collective rowing and clinical experience to build a shorter, focused course specifically for clinicians. The 2.5-day immersive program combined classroom sessions on high-performing teams with hands-on rowing experience, creating space for physicians to learn about leadership while physically experiencing teamwork.

Reflection

"Finally, and this is probably the most important. The course made me feel less isolated and alone. By taking this course with leaders OUTSIDE my normal day/life/work etc it made me feel part of something bigger. It also gave me a different network that I feel like I can tap into the next time I'm feeling like I'm struggling." — Pilot Program Participant

Reflection & Outcomes

In just a few days, we developed a group that could row all 8 together for 500 meters. Participants walked away with new skills for engaging their teams and dramatically improved leadership engagement.

Communication platform for large-scale Scout events

The Rekindling Project

Moving beyond burnout to rediscover purpose, joy, and sustainable practice.

The Rekindling Project emerged from personal experience with burnout and the realization that recovery isn't about becoming more efficient—it's about rediscovering what makes work meaningful. Rather than teaching resilience, I focus on helping professionals rekindle the spark that drew them to their calling in the first place.
